So what's with this 350 anyway?

Believe in Buy Nothing Day yet?

An article posted on CNN.com describing how a WalMart employee was TRAMPLED TO DEATH by shoppers pushing to enter the store at 5 AM! Have we lost our minds? Have we so little humanity that no one notices when they’re crushing another human being? Have we so little respect for our Emergency Rescue and Police personnel attempting to save someone’s life that we can’t give them the space to do their work?

All for cheap stuff.

Junk that we don’t need, which will end up in a landfill; detritus not even having the redeeming feature of being recyclable.

Wal-Mart worker dies in rush; two killed at toy store
In New York, video footage showed as many as a dozen people knocked to the floor in the stampede of people trying to get into the Wal-Mart store, Fleming said. The employee was “stepped on by hundreds of people” as other workers attempted to fight their way through the crowd, Fleming said.

“Several minutes” passed before others were able to clear space around the man and render some aid. Police arrived, and “as they were giving first aid, those police officers were also jostled and pushed,” he said.

Happy Thanksgiving

The Most Important Number in the World

Filed under: Climate Change — Tim at 9:32 am on Saturday, November 22, 2008

In honor of seeing Bill McKibben speak last night I’ve bedecked the web site with the most important number in the world – 350. Three hundred and fifty is the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide in parts per million which scientists believe we need to achieve in order to avert run-away climate change. We’re currently at 387 and growing by an average of 2 PPM per year.

So here’s the problem summary in my words (not his). Every man, woman, and child on the globe has just been diagnosed with cancer. We have four years to make major changes to our lifestyle or else people start dying. Period. No more sugar coating. Threat is real and it is now. Mosquito born disease, starvation, flooding, increase intensity of hurricanes, a 2m increase in sea-levels, mass extinction events, and the list goes on. I’ve lost all my tolerance for global warming nay-sayers.

So I’ve decided I’m going to put up what we (the Wysocki Family) are going to do about it and what we’ve done. I’m mobilizing my audience of one! (Hi Mom). I’ve created a page to show how we’re doing.

The Elves and the Weaver

Filed under: Updates — Lisa at 10:07 am on Friday, November 14, 2008

There once lived a good weaver who was a dragon. The dragon’s name was Caelum. She only had enough yarn to make one weaving. Caelum went to bed and in the morning the weaving was made. It was a beautiful weaving. That same day she sold the weaving. The person who bought it paid enough for Caelum to buy yarn to make two weavings. Caelum wondered who or what had done her work for her so she decided to stay up later so she could find out. And what do you think she saw? It was two elves! They started to weave. Caelum decided to make the elves some clothing. They were very, very happy with the clothes. One of them said, “I like this clothing!” And then they went out the door. She never saw the elves again.
