So what's with this 350 anyway?

… the guestbook. Apparently, through circumstances that seem almost too improbable to be believed, some estranged relatives managed to make contact with each other on via our guestbook. The kicker is that I have no earthly idea who these folks are! At any rate, I’m happy for you and I’m glad to be of service.

Aquaducts and Spring

Filed under: Updates — Lisa at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Piper has officially finished the 1st grade level of Hooked on Phonics. Yeah! She also read her very first Henry and Mudge book today with very little help from Mom and told someone yesterday that reading was fun (music to Mom’s ears). We’ve headed on to the Romans for history and made a Roman aqueduct on Monday. Imagine my surprise when it dawned on me that those aquaducts we saw in France were used to carry water. Get it… aqua … duct. I’m usually not that thick, but boy sometimes. :-) Anyhow, I’ll try to get a picture up of the aquaduct. Despite some structural integrity issues it was kind of cool. We’ve got tons of plant experiments going on for science. We’re sprouting radish seeds to look at how roots work, sprouting mung bean seeds for growth monitoring, how plants absorb water, and what happens to leaves when they don’t get any light, and looking at the germination of corn seeds. Have you ever counted the number of seeds on corncob? 602 on ours. If you figure 3 ears per corn plant that around 1800 seed per plant. Who knew? Now that we’re heading into spring, it’s field trip season again. A few that we have lined up are Owen’s farm to make wool felted flowers, Lowell National Historical Park for something called “Change in the Making, and an outing on Nature Journaling.  Definitely looking forward to getting out of the house a bit more.
Piper has built around 20 horses from legos. This project has been going on for several days and the herd is in a rainbow of colors. Another one I’ll try to photo. I’m currently looking into riding lessons to feed the horsey obsession for after she turns 7 this summer.

On the kitchen front we’re trying to figure out the sink. Silly backwards me, I cook and actually have dishes that require hand washing so I’d really like a 2 bowl sink. The average sink with 2 bowls is around 32 inches which is just a tad to large. Since the cabinets are in, I’m slowly getting things put away. It’s quite a relief to be able to find things again. Although I still haven’t found my frying pan. Not quite sure how I managed to lose a 13 inch fry pan, but it gives you an idea of the general state of chaos.

Tim and I are currently obsessing on 2 series. A friend of mine told me about Heroes and we got completely sucked in. The great thing about this one is that it is available online the day after it broadcasts along with all of the previous episodes. The other is a recent addition, we just watched the Battlestar Galactica mini-series and it even managed to keep me up way past my bedtime.

In true New England fashion, it was 70 degrees last Wednesday and Friday we got 13 inches of snow. The biggest storm we’ve had all winter. In fact, this is only the 2nd time Piper has been able to build a snowman. Temperatures are supposed to be going back up this weekend though!

Happy Spring!

Home Improvement Update

The cabinets are in their final locations and secured to the wall.  The problem with covering the plywood at the end has been solved and we’re about ready to bring the counter top people in to template.  On Friday the cork floor in the living room was installed.

The cork is very nice and soft on the feet.
